Beyond the Hashtag: The Evolving Landscape of GBV Advocacy
By Monica Brown, CEO, South Africa Scream Pty Ltd
In the past few years, we have seen the incredible power of a hashtag. A simple phrase, a few words preceded by a pound sign, can mobilise millions, ignite conversations, and shine a much-needed light on the darkest corners of our society. For the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the hashtag has been a vital tool for raising awareness and giving voice to the voiceless. But the truth we must confront is this: awareness is not enough. The time has come to move beyond the hashtag and into an era of tangible action and lasting impact.
The conversation has evolved, and the demands are changing. We are no longer satisfied with viral posts and online outrage. We are demanding real, systemic change that protects, supports, and empowers. This is the new landscape of GBV advocacy—one where online solidarity must translate into on-the-ground solutions.
New Legal Precedents and the Call for Justice
A critical part of this evolution lies within our legal and judicial systems. Advocacy groups are pushing for stronger legal frameworks, swifter court processes, and more compassionate responses from law enforcement. The focus is shifting to accountability, ensuring that perpetrators are held responsible and survivors are protected. The call for justice is a demand for a system that works for the most vulnerable, not against them. It is a demand for a legal system that understands the complexities of trauma and the urgency of a protection order.
The Role of Corporate Responsibility
Companies are increasingly being held accountable for their role in the GBV epidemic. Corporate responsibility is no longer just about social media campaigns during 16 Days of Activism; it is about creating safe workplaces, implementing clear policies against harassment, and providing resources and support for employees who are survivors. It’s about using corporate power and influence to champion GBV prevention, to sponsor programs, and to educate their own staff. True corporate responsibility means transforming the workplace into a safe space for all.
Creating Safe Spaces, Online and Offline
While online platforms have been instrumental in advocacy, they can also be dangerous places for survivors. The next frontier of advocacy is about creating and protecting safe spaces. This means advocating for a safer internet, free from harassment and abuse. It also means building physical sanctuaries—shelters, support centers, and communal spaces—where survivors can find refuge, therapy, legal aid, and a community that understands their journey. This is where true transformation begins: in the safe, quiet places where healing can take root.
The fight against GBV is not over. It has just entered a new, more demanding phase. It is a phase that requires more than just likes and shares; it requires us to roll up our sleeves, to hold our leaders and our institutions accountable, and to build the safe world we all deserve.
Let's make sure our actions speak louder than our hashtags.
